It isn't clear what spurred a confrontation between Amanda Ponzio and some juveniles in Barnegat Tuesday afternoon. But police say it stopped when they allegedly found her in the middle of Schooner Avenue, brandishing a rifle.

Township police said they received several calls about a woman waving a weapon in the street at about 3:46 PM. Responding officers apprehended Ponzio, 35, without incident, and recovered a Remington 597 rifle.

Authorities did not disclose the nature of the argument, whether the firearm was loaded or whether ammunition was present, but Lieutenant Keith Germain indicated that there was nothing to indicate that Ponzio had been harassed.

She was placed in the Ocean County Jail in Toms River on two weapons charges, a count of child endangerment, and three counts of terroristic threats. Bail was set at $175,000.

Authorities did not elaborate on whether Ponzio was undergoing psychological evaluation.
