Kean University building evacuated, NJ Transit suspended over suspicious package

UNION TOWNSHIP (Union) — Some scary moments at Kean University on Thursday morning thanks to a suspicious package found at a nearby NJ Transit station.

The university tweeted the discovery of a suspicious package on the platform near the tracks at Union Station around 10 a.m., which caused the brief suspension of service on NJ Transit's Raritan Valley Line.

A large contingent of police, fire and EMT equipment also responded to the threat.

A second tweet ordered a voluntary evacuation of the Green Lane building opposite the station.

Kean police and NJ Transit cleared the package less than an hour later.

"The Union County Bomb Squad investigated and it's all clear now," university spokeswoman Margaret McCorry told New Jersey 101.5. NJ Transit spokesman Jim Smith said service was restored with no delays around 10:30 a.m.
