Janis Tice: Forever a Big Part of Toms River South Pride

Janis Tice was a respected, admired and beloved teacher and coach who spent 30 years at Toms River High School South before retiring in 2010.  Prior to that she was a standout athlete at Paulsboro High School where she is a member of the Hall of Fame and later Glassboro State (now Rowan University).

Tice started the girl’s lacrosse program at South in 1997 when it was first introduced as a sub varsity “club sport” and became the head coach of the varsity team the following year. In her later years she became an assistant to one of her former players Cathy Humphrey (Homiek) and my daughter Alex had the pleasure of playing for Coach Tice.

Two months ago Janis lost a long battle with breast cancer at the age of 61 and tomorrow night prior to the Indians game against Brick her contributions and memory will be honored as part of Senior Night.  Many of her former players and others from the lacrosse community are expected for the 6:30 p.m. ceremony to salute a pioneer who will remain a large part of the legacy that is “South Pride”

I have said many times that a subject that drives coaches, athletic directors and yes members of the media crazy is college recruiting because way too many parents think their son or daughter is good enough to receive a college scholarship, or even understand that not all scholarships are the same.

For that reason alone tomorrow night’s free program at Point Pleasant Borough High School should be of interest to many.  The school’s athletic department is presenting “The Reality of Recruiting” which is described as a realistic look at college recruitment for student athletes and their parents.  The event is open to the public with parents and athletes from throughout the Shore Conference encouraged and invited to attend.

According to Supervisor of Athletics Chris Ferrone the goal of the forum is to provide information necessary to navigate through the recruiting process from the chances of receiving a scholarship to the daily life of today’s college student-athlete.  Moderated by schools superintendent Vincent Smith they have put together an outstanding group of panelists including Rutgers head wrestling Coach Scott Goodale, Seton Hall assistant basketball coach Fred Hill and Robert Farrell, the Associate Head Track & Field Coach at Rutgers.

The event will take place in the Point Borough High School auditorium beginning at 7pm.
