Jane Lynch Pays Tribute to Cory Monteith at 2013 Emmy Awards
Jane Lynch memorialized her ‘Glee’ co-star Cory Monteith, who died of a drug overdose in July at the tender age of 31, during tonight’s (Sept. 22) Emmys telecast. Lynch told the world that Monteith was such a kind soul and so full of charm that it was incredibly easy to fall in love with him.
While the decision to include Monteith as part of the night’s remembrance portion, which paid homage to those who are no longer with us, drew some criticism, Lynch’s short but sweet speech revealed why Monteith was so beloved by fans of the show and beyond. Ultimately, her words proved why the late actor was deserving of the tribute and why the show’s producers made the right choice.
“From the first time you saw Cory, he had a star quality and a genuine sweetness that made it impossible to not fall in love with him,” the actress said.
Lynch also claimed that her late co-star had a beautiful soul, and she took care to acknowledge that he was not perfect, something that many people in Hollywood who battle the demon of addiction can relate to.
It was an important point for Lynch to make. Monteith was not absolved of his sins via this memorial, as all facets of his life were accurately portrayed.
Lynch also noted that Monteith was worthy of the love he received, despite being flawed and battling addiction. She pointed out that his generosity was both striking and unbridled.
“We remember him for all he was and mourn what he could have been,” Lynch stated.
That’s what makes Monteith’s death so tragic. At least we got to know him via his work for 31 years.
