Richard Mitchell, say police, was one of the drivers involved, but didn't stay around after impact, estimated at some time before 6:42 PM.

Police say that their Chief, Brian Klimakowski, noted the malfunctioning signal on the state highway and County Route 571, then saw the mangled signal box and a car with heavy damage on the roadside. An off-duty New Jersey State Trooper discovered Mitchell's car at Blackie's Welding on Route 571.

Ridgeway volunteer firefighters and township patrol officers directed traffic while state transportation crews rebuit the box through the night.
