Why is former Miami coach and Colts Neck native Al Golden suddenly following top New Jersey high school football prospects?

NJ Advance Media reports that Al Golden is a leading candidate for the head football coach position at Rutgers University, although he has not been brought to campus yet for a visit or formally been interviewed. ESPN's Brett McMurphy tweeted that Ohio State defensive coordinator Chris Ash is also candidate of "high interest."

Golden, who hadn't tweeted since August, began following a number of programs and prospects this week. Paramus Catholic offered a welcome to Golden in a tweet as he started following that program along with New Milford and Cedar Creek.

Top-rated players Devin Miller from Metuchen, Cherry Hill West's Harrison Hand and Kenny Pickett can now count Golden as a follower.

“Al Golden is uniquely qualified to become the next coach at Rutgers. He’s a Monmouth County native (Red Bank Catholic) who was a captain at Penn State and knows New Jersey well as he recruited the state while an assistant at Boston College & Virginia and later a head coach at Temple and Miami," said Kevin Williams of the Shore Sports Network. "He resurrected the program at Temple and did exactly what he was asked to do at Miami: clean up what had been a mess.

Fan favorite and former Rutgers coach Greg Schiano is still in play after the University of Miami Hurricanes passed on hiring him in favor of Mark Richt.

Head coach Kyle Flood and athletic director Julie Herman were fired from their respective positions on Sunday. Patrick Hobbs was immediately named the new athletic director.
