“In all of these scams, they’re trying to get your Social Security number, your bank account number, your routing number, your password or your pin,” IRS spokesman Dave Stewart said.

Leading the list is identity theft. He says the way scammers go about it varies, but the goal is always the same.

He says the Internal Revenue Service has reassigned 3,000 agents nationwide to work on catching and halting identity theft. Other scams on the list include phony return preparers, hiding income offshore and those who pose as charities to get a tax break.

There are also scammers out there offering taxpayers, “free money.”

As the April 15 federal income tax deadline approaches, the Justice Department says it has closed more than 30 unscrupulous tax preparers and tax fraud promoters in the last six months. Tax preparers handle more than 80 million tax returns annually, and 60 percent of taxpayers hire tax professionals.
