Charles Waldron, 29, of Point Pleasant Borough, was pronounced dead at Centrastate Medical Center in Freehold at 11:19 PM, a little more than a half-hour after Howell police fielded the report of the incident slightly north of West Farms Road, authorities said.

Jesse McMachon, 20, of Brick, was behind the wheel of the 2010 Mazda 6. Neither he nor his passengers, Matthew Kuras, 21, and Daniel Kerrigan II, 20, also of Brick were injured, police said.

McMahon stopped on the roadside immediately, police said.

He told investigators that he didn't spot Waldron until it was too late to avoid impact. Police determined that Waldron crossed the highway from east to west, climbing over the concrete divider. They noted that there is no crosswalk or pedestrian crossing signal in the vicinity.

No witnesses, other than the driver and passengers, have brought information to the attention of investigators. The probe is still open.

Anyone with information about it can speak to Patrolman Matthew Cherney, 732-938-4575, extension 2629, or MCherney@howellpolice.org.
