A friend of mine was just telling me about an awkward situation that she ran into this past Memorial Day Weekend, and it made me think about how I'd handle it if I was put in a similar situation.

Here's what happened:

She was in a crowded part of Ocean County for the weekend. A man pulled into a parking spot and stumbled over to a vendor stand that she was working at. He was talking to the workers at the stand loudly and obnoxiously, and she said that he reeked of alcohol.

They saw him drive into the parking lot, and didn't know if he intended to leave right away or not.

What do you do?

My friend and her co-workers debated among themselves whether to call the police or not. They decided to call the local police office (not 9-1-1) and explain what was going on.

Within a few minutes, a pair of officers quietly arrived (no lights or sirens) and spoke to the man, apparently telling him that if he has anywhere to be, he either needs to get a ride or walk.

The man eventually walked away, leaving his car. My friend told me that a police car drove past every 15 minutes or so to make sure that the man hadn't gotten back behind the wheel.

Obviously, their conscientious thinking could have saved a life (his, or someone else's), but it does take a level of guts to make that call - you never know if the situation will turn ugly or the subject will try to retaliate later.

Thankfully, though, a potential tragedy was averted.

Have you ever been faced with a situation like this? What did you do? What would you do if this happened to you? Tell us in the comments!
