The Federal Bureau of Investigation used to reach out to the public and ask for help in solving crimes by posting "most wanted" posters in Post Offices across New Jersey, but a new effort is under way to connect with people in a different way.

According to Special Agent for the FBI in New Jersey Celeste Danzi, the bureau launched a Twitter account a couple of months ago.

"We're trying to reach out to that younger demographic and get them interested in the FBI, and let them know what we're doing," she said. "We are trying to change with the times, using all the media available to us."

She said the Twitter feed includes press releases of arrests, the different campaigns the FBI is involved in, and when they're hiring.

"We need to reach out to all ages and get in contact with the public," Danzi said. "We want them to know what we're investigating and we want their help."

She also said the FBI in New Jersey has updated its webpage.

"It's www.fbi.gov/newark," she said. "On that webpage you'll see our most wanted and the case of the week.

Danzi said sometimes, the cases that are featured are cold cases, from 10 and even 20 years ago.

"Murder and kidnapping investigations are never closed," she said. "They're open until we find out what happened."

Another new initiative involves posting information on electronic billboards.

"We have electronic billboards, over 29 in the state of New Jersey, that we use the way we did in the past with the wanted posters," Danzi said. "We still have the wanted posters, but we believe we have better visibility with the electronic billboards."

If you're not into tweeting and you don't used the internet that much, Danzi said you can still contact the FBI the old fashioned way - by picking up a telephone.

"Our number," said Danzi, "is 973-792-3000. We want people to help us solve crimes and participate in the law enforcement community by being a good citizen."
