As some strong spring thunderstorms roll through Ocean County this afternoon, I have a new concern to think about - my new dog.

Since it's only been a handful of days, we're still getting to know each others' habits and idiosyncrasies. There is still a lot that I don't know about Scooter. Among those is how he handles thunderstorms.

Thunderstorm phobia in dogs is one of the most common causes of anxiety to our furry family members.

I was lucky that my first dog Sydney wasn't too concerned with thunderstorms. The worst that would happen when storms got bad would be that she would stick to me like glue. But she wouldn't get like some dogs who tremble, hide, and even get sick when storms roll in.

Of course when I'm home, I can comfort Scooter and snuggle up with him, but today is a good example of those times that I'm not home to help out when a storm passes through the neighborhood.

I've had some friends swear by the Thundershirt, and others pass it off as an overpriced piece of bunk science.

So how do you help your furry friend deal with scary weather? Comment below with your methods!
