How are New Jersey’s Utilities Holding Up in This Heat?

So far, so good.  That’s the word from utilities across New Jersey as temperatures soar into the 90s and the humidity bears down on the region.

“We’ve been preparing and planning for the extreme heat throughout the year. ,” said PSEG spokesperson Bonnie Sheppard.  “We’ve been checking transformers and pumps and fans and generators.  We’ve ensured that cable is available.  We’ve trimmed trees and even done animal-proofing.  We do have resources and crews ready if they’re needed to handle any stresses on the equipment or heat-related outages.”

“The people in charge of the regional power grid tell us they have adequate power supplies and they’re taking steps to make sure power remains available, but they aren’t anticipating any impact on customers,” said Sheppard.

So, what can you do as the consumer to conserve?  “Turn off everything you’re not using, lights, TVs and computers.  Even if you keep your computers in stand-by mode, they’re still drawing some electricity.  If you’re not using it, unplug it.  Close the blinds and the shades.  If you have central air and aren’t using all the rooms, close the vents in those rooms.  You should also delay any heat-producing tasks, like laundry and cooking, until tonight,” said Sheppard.
