Hometown Heroes will hold its 6th Annual Gala and Awards Dinner on Thursday night at the Crystal Point Yacht Club and after a one-year hiatus I will be back in the saddle as the Master of Ceremonies.

Many of you are aware of the organization because of the countless number of local people they helped during Superstorm Sandy but Hometown Heroes was created in 2008 by Mike Schwarz and continues its mission today.  They have helped more than 2500 families and over 10,000 individuals with housing, children and elderly services, disabilities assistance, veteran’s services, basically everything from A-Z.  The missions has always been a simple one: help those in a crisis.

This year Hometown Heroes is honoring Monica Vermuelen, Jay Alders, Mike Ciccotello, Donna Setaro and FirstEnergy Corporation for being heroes who have made a difference.  They will be saluted on Thursday night at the gala which will feature special guests: former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik and Darrell Reid, a Freehold native and former NFL player who won a Super Bowl with the Indianapolis Colts in 2007.

Thursday’s event begins with a cocktail hour at 6 p.m. and will include a unique “Tonight Show” theme while also featuring a delicious dinner, premier gift auction and more.  For additional information and how to purchase tickets visit usahometownheroes.org or call 732-473-9400.

On a totally unrelated note, high school baseball fans in Toms River will likely get to see highly-regarded Barnegat pitching ace Jason Groome on Saturday when the Bengals visit Toms River North in the semifinals of the Ocean County Tournament.  Behind Jared Kacso, Barnegat upset previously undefeated Point Boro Monday while the Mariners topped Jackson Liberty.  The quarterfinals in the other half of the bracket will be played tomorrow when Brick visits Brick Memorial and Toms River South hosts Point Beach.
