A Toms River certified home health aide was arrested and charged with theft after allegedly pawning jewelry belonging to an elderly Whiting woman whom she was supposed to be taking care of.
35 year old Soraya Rivera-Darley was arrested after a three week long investigation. On December 13th, Cpl. Richard Chevrier responded to a residence in the Cedar Glen lakes area after a report of theft. The homeowner reported that around $5,000 worth of jewelry was stolen. The homeowner told Cpl. Chevrier that there was no other possible suspect.
Rivera-Darley had only been her home health aide since late November. After taking the report the case was assigned to Det. Craig Beaulieu of the department's investigations Bureau. Detective Beaulieu checked the regional data pawn sharing system and found that Rivera-Darley had made transactions during the time she was employed at the victim's residence.
In total, 25 pieces of jewelry were found to have been sold by Rivera-Darley. Almost all of the items were recovered.
Detective Beaulieu will be working with the Division of Consumer Affairs to potentially identify other victims.
