This edition of "Hiking New Jersey" finds us in Washington Township, Burlington County at the Batsto Historic Village. Batsto is part of the Wharton State Forest. This State park area spreads out to three counties ... Atlantic, Burlington and Camden Counties.

What I like about a trip here is that you can take advantage of the trails of Wharton State Forest and take in the Historic Village of Batsto. There are several trails to use in Wharton. The trails range from easy 2 mile hikes to the lengthy Batona Trail

During summer it can get a bit buggy and the trails can get tight due to plant growth, so make sure you take precautions to avoid ticks and other critters.

You will see folks canoeing and kayaking on Batsto Lake.

You can also take in the Historic Village of Batsto which is full of history and sites. NJ residents will have to pay $5 admission. There are restrooms, gift shop and historic buildings to tour throughout the park. It makes for a great "day trip".

Overall you can make a a full day of it between the history and the hiking!
