One of the trails we have used on numerous occasions to hike is the Barnegat Branch Trail. The trail extends 15.6 miles from Barnegat to Toms River. We usually go to section of the trail on the Waretown/Barnegat border.

Here are some things we like about the BBT:

  • Wide Trails: Perfect for hikers, joggers and bikers. The wide trails also keeps you from having to go through brush, which is a great benefit during Summer and tick season!
  • Location: The trail is easy to access right off Route 9 and it is not an "isolated" trail, so it's safe to hike alone without worries of being far from people.
  • History: The trail has a section which teaches some history of the area and the trail.
  • Ecology: The trail has several stops where you can learn about the native plants and trees of the area.

By the way we also found some "painted rocks" along the way, so keep your eyes out!

The trail is flat with a firm surface .... so it's perfect for any hiking level. Lot's of dog lovers take their pets for a walk and there are "doggy bags" along the way and trash receptacles.
