Back in October I did a Hometown View on Hannah Donner, a senior volleyball player at Central Regional High School who suffered serious injuries after crashing her car head on into a tree. That segment addressed the sportsmanship shown during Central’s next match by their opponents Donovan Catholic while Hannah was still unconscious in the hospital.

Then in December I did an update on how the Shore Conference volleyball community had rallied around the Golden Eagles captain who was still recovering from a broken ankle, fractured nose and orbital socket, bleeding in her brain, various contusions and more.

In April I met Hannah for the first time. She introduced herself to me and I was amazed at how good she looked. She did return to school and eventually her job at ShopRite and will graduate next month before attending The College of New Jersey. A member of the National Honor Society her mom Lisa told me while there will be more surgeries in the future doctors are amazed at the rate of her recovery.

Why another update? Well on Friday, June 9th there will be a benefit basketball game at the Pine Belt Arena to help with the staggering medical expenses the Donner family has incurred. Heroes For Hannah will match members of the Toms River Police Department against students and teachers from both Toms River North and Central Regional. Game time is 7 p.m. (doors will open at 6 p.m.) and yours truly has agreed to announce the game which will also feature raffles with great prizes including a 60 inch TV, jewelry, a golf foursome, gift certificates and more. There will also be Heroes For Hannah t-shirts sold during the evening.

The benefit basketball game is a great way to show support for Hannah and her family as they deal with not only the medical costs to this point but what will come with future surgeries throughout the recovery process.

Tickets are $18 and can be purchased in advance by calling Lisa Mahon at 732-581-2412. They will also be available at the Pine Belt Arena on June 9th. Hope to see you at the game!
