Some of you probably heard about the fire in Toms River last week that destroyed the home of Toms River First Aid Squad captain Alyssa Golembeski and her family, a family that has been devoted to serving the community.

Also living in that home was Golembeski’s sister, Ashley Hollingsworth who is president-elect of the first aid squad and a volunteer firefighter, Alyssa’s mother Christine who is treasurer of the first aid squad, grandmother who is an honorary member and squad Chaplain, her aunt and 11-year old cousin.

Golembeski was inside at the time of the fire and suffered second degree burns to her back and foot and the family lost several pets as well in the blaze in which a space heater was determined to have been the cause.

This family of volunteers lost all their possessions with the exception of the clothes on their back and while never a good time to have this happen just before Christmas makes for an even more devastating loss.  While they have been staying in a hotel and receiving some assistance from the Red Cross it is fellow members of the first aid squad and friends who are really coming to the rescue.

Flier for spaghetti dinner to benefit Alyssa Golembeski and her family

They have launched a Go Fund Me drive to help provide some of the necessities so the Golembeski family can get back on their feet and so far it’s almost doubled its original goal of $5,000.  In addition their first aid squad family will be holding a spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Friday, December 28 from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. at the Pleasant Plains First Aid Squad on Clayton Road.  All proceeds from the dinner while go directly to the family/  Click the event's Facebook page for more information.

This family has answered the call time and time again to help others. it’s nice to see the community coming together in their time of need.
