"Oh look," my sister said, "We can get waxing done at Walmart!"  There was a bit of sarcasm in her tone so I looked up at the sign she was pointing at.  It read, "Ask About Our Waxing Services."  We were out in Western Pennsylvania at the time and both of us chuckled at the idea of getting waxed at Walmart.

But as I thought more about it, I realized the superstore chain is addressing the needs of their customers.  Many of their stores around the country have Smart Style salons.  (The closest to us seem to be in Old Bridge and East Brunswick.)  They offer haircuts, coloring, perms, and waxing so shoppers can take care of their grooming needs during a trip to the store.

In a similar way, many large stores also include vision centers so you can get your eye exam and glasses.  And by now we're all used to seeing cafes in stores, plus the groceries that are sold now truly allow us to do "one-stop shopping."

It seems that American businesses are responding to the needs of time-crunched shoppers, doesn't it?  But is it fair to the small "Mom and Pop" shops?  Do you like the idea of one-stop shopping, with many types of products and services offered under one roof?  Or do you prefer to visit different stores and shops in Ocean County?
