Half of Americans Don’t Have Enough Savings [AUDIO/POLL]

A new survey shows only one in two of us have enough savings to adequately prepare for our future.

To encourage more Americans to save, more than 1,000 non-profit, government and corporate groups have joined hands to encourage people to save money during America Saves Week which runs until March 2.

Those who spearhead this annual savings awareness effort describe it as an opportunity to focus on, and encourage individuals, especially those with little or no savings, to take some positive steps toward a savings goal.

"Forty-five percent of Americans have more credit card debt than they have savings in their savings account," said Joe Kelly of America Saves.

Kelly said there was an increase in interest in savings across America after 9/11. But that savings interest has gradually waned.

One in three in the survey do not have sufficient savings for unexpected emergencies.

Just like building a house, savings starts with a blueprint.  "There's never a time not to start. a little savings is better than none," said Kelly.
