Gusty Wind, Blustery Days

A cold front has passed through New Jersey, which has brought and will bring a variety of weather to the state. Rain yesterday, wind today, and much cooler temperatures this weekend!

The big weather story for Friday will be the fierce westerly wind. Regular gusts over 30 mph are expected (especially this afternoon). A few wind gusts may approach gale-force 45 mph. According to the Beaufort wind scale, such winds have the power to:

  • Make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles such as trucks, buses, and vans
  • Make walking against the wind quite challenging
  • Break twigs off trees
  • Sway large trees back and forth
  • Significantly move dust, leaves, and paper

High temperatures on Friday actually won't be too bad, maxing out in the upper 50s to around 60 degrees. That's right around the seasonal normals for this time of year. Skies will become mostly sunny, although I can't rule out a light shower or sprinkle in North Jersey for the first half of the day.

Cooldown

We have enjoyed above normal temperatures since the beginning of November - and you had to know the warmth wouldn't last forever! Alas, the same front that is generating the aforementioned gusty winds will deliver a shot of much cooler air into this weekend.

Friday night, low temperatures are expected to fall to the mid to upper 30s. That's cold enough for a widespread frost on Saturday morning. Additionally, the brisk westerly wind will continue overnight - probably not as gusty as during the day on Friday, but still enough to keep the air moving. Wind chills may fall into the 20s if temperatures are cold enough and the wind is strong enough. That's cold! Be sure to bundle up if you have outdoor plans this evening or late tonight.

Thermometers will bottom out on Saturday, with forecast high temperatures around 50 degrees, at best. Although we will see plenty of sun and blue skies, wind gusts will return to the 30 to 40 mph range making for a downright blustery day. In fact, Saturday still looks to be New Jersey's coldest day since mid-March!

Warmup

I'm happy to say the November chill will be only temporary this time around, with a nice warming trend taking over through early next week.

On Sunday, winds will calm significantly... So, given abundant sunshine, afternoon temperatures will be able to recover into the seasonable mid 50s. As we switch to a southeasterly flow Monday and Tuesday, temperatures will continue to warm. The first half of next week will feature high temperatures in the lower to mid 60s - not bad for mid-November at all!

Our next appreciable chance of rain won't come until next Friday.
