Facing a March 1 deadline, both Democrat and Republican chief executives warned on Saturday of widespread economic fallout should Washington lawmakers fail to reach a compromise. Governors from across the nation gathered this weekend in Washington for the National Governors Association annual meeting.

Governor Christie was scheduled to arrive on Saturday night for the meetings according to the Star-Ledger.

On Sunday morning, several governors are scheduled to speak on national television. They'll join at least two members of President Barack Obama's Cabinet, who've already warned of severe consequences. Hundreds of thousands of employees from the Department of Defense and the Department of Transportation may be furloughed.

Christie is not among those making the appearances.

There are few signs of urgency among congressional leaders, who have indicated a willingness to let the cuts take effect.
