Governor’s Fairness Formula forum in Wall Township Tuesday

Governor Christie's consensus-building for his "Fairness Formula" approach to school aid and educational achievement reaches Wall Township Tuesday, when he leads a discussion at the Monmouth County Library branch on Allaire Road.

Christie considers the current school-aid distribution system a failure, sending 58 percent of state funds to urban schools that house 23 percent of New Jersey's students.

"It's failing families and their children. It's bankrupting our state," the Governor said last week. "It's driving families from their homes and from New Jersey."

His concept is equal distribution of funds per student to each district, regardless of fiscal conditions, rather than proportionate distribution - a method that he claims would scale back property taxes in 75 percent of New Jersey's school districts.

So far, the legislature is divided largely around party lines, Republicans largely in support and influential Democrats labeling it divisive and detrimental to the state's most vulnerable students.
