Valentine's Day is less than three weeks away, but lovers in New Jersey looking to grab the Garden State's favorite sweet treat may be in for heartbreak this year.

When it comes to picking the perfect edible present, in New Jersey boxes of chocolates are for chumps, according to CandyStore.com.

In their annual survey of the U.S., candy conversation hearts reigned supreme in nearly half the country, including right here in Jersey.

But, there's one big problem this year:

Sweetheart brand candy conversation hearts won't be available in 2019.

It's true, the most popular brand, made by the legendary New England Confectionery Company (better known as Necco) will be hard to find this year.

Necco's assets hit the auction block last summer when the 117 year old company couldn't overcome bankruptcy.

In the aftermath, a number of their brands, including Sweethearts, got scooped up by another candy company. but officials at the new company said that they won't have time to ramp up production of the candy hearts in time for Valentine's Day 2019.

The good news is that Spangler Candy Company said that hungry heart devotees can expect the clever candies back by Valentine's Day 2020.

In the meantime, you might find some Sweethearts left over from last year (which, by the way, has become a burgeoning business online, naturally), so for 2019 you'll either have to find a second favorite candy, or settle for stale secondhand Sweethearts.
