Steve MacLaughlin is with Blackbaud, a software company that keeps score of online contributions during Giving Tuesday.

He said the 2500 groups involved in the event are hoping to build on 2012's success.

"Last year, we processed a little over $10 million in online giving on Giving Tuesday," he said. "So we will be very keen to look and see if data and trends from 2013 to see how Giving Tuesday is growing."

He explained the fact that Giving Tuesday this year falls on Tuesday, December 3rd is really important because it is the start of the annual end-of-giving campaigns for many nonprofit organizations.

There are some very ambitious hopes for tomorrow in many places. Baltimore hopes to raise $5 million with the help of local partners.

MacLaughlin said it's not just about giving money.

Giving Tuesday is seeking new partners and volunteers as it moves forward. He said people can think about it potentially becoming a board member or an adviser.

"If you've got expertise in a particular area, local nonprofits can certainly value and go where they want to go by having you involved as a individual," MacLaughlin said.

For those who are interested in finding out about trends in the charitable sector or how Giving Tuesday influenced overall giving in the nonprofit sector on a monthly basis, Blackbaud publishes the 'Blackbaud Index,' which can be viewed online.
