As efforts continue to save the legendary Bayville Dinosaur on Route 9, it appears the landmark will be repaired and remain at its original location, according to Alfred T. Stokely, former president of the Berkeley Township Historical Society.

Stokely said the historical society had proposed moving the dinosaur to its museum, but the bank that owns the property where the dinosaur sits in front of a vacant building doesn't appear to be in favor of doing that, following a recent meeting with Mayor Carmen Amato and members of Berkeley Township Citizens Group. However, if that happens, there is another idea being proposed.

"The historical society would, more or less, after it's repaired, be given some type of legality as to its up keep, and more or less, keeping it at that spot, but we would be responsible in the future, and possibly have ownership just for the dinosaur," said Stokely.

The dinosaur was placed facing south in the early 1930's and marked the half-way point for travelers heading from New York City to Atlantic City, according to Stokely.

"We want to keep it for future posterity," Stokely said.

He personally would like to see the dinosaur restored to its original configuration and size.

"It had spikes on it and a different head, and it really looked like a true dinosaur. Over the years it has been modified so many times," he added.
