Future For Town Without A Council

It’s a strange case of politics in the Monmouth County town of Farmingdale where all six members of the town council stepped down- forcing the first meeting in August to be cancelled.

Borough Mayor John p “Jay” Morgan one of the few remaining member elected official to continue serving.

Council president Kathryne Baghsarian, Karen Corallo, and Erich Schneider resigned on Monday, while William Donovan and Anthony Infante resigned July 31st. Councilwoman Kathleen Farrington, the only Democrat, resigned last month. The Borough’s Clerk and Code Enforcement Officer also resigned.

The reason for the mass resignations is being attributed to “communication issues”. Former Councilman Donovan told the Asbury Park Press there was no civility at the meeting and “There’s too much screaming and hollering and I mean literally nose to nose screaming matches.”

Matthew Weng, attorney for the League of Municipalities says explains normally that when one or two spots open up on a municipal council, the remaining public body appoints a position.

“But obviously everyone here resigned.” He adds it’s “very rare to have an entire council resign en masse.”

Weng notes it will be now up to Governor Christie to appoint six new members and will have thirty days to do so.

According to a spokesman for the governor, the Governor’s Office and the Department of Community Affairs are aware of the situation.

“Local officials have been in contact with the administration on how to proceed with filling the council vacancies in accordance with statutory powers and responsibilities of the governor in just such a rare and unusual situation,”

Weng notes Mayor Morgan has no authority in appointing any positions.
