It was certainly a fire that clogged up traffic for  bit on a Friday afternoon but the most important thing is nobody was hurt in the blaze at the Universal Recycling Yard (Eastern Metal Recycling) on Double Trouble Road in Berkeley Township.

What caused the fire however remains under investigation.

"The fire occurred near a pile of household appliances that were being recycled," said Berkeley Township Police Chief Karin DiMichele in a press release. "Preliminary investigation indicates the fire was accidental and occurred while workers were performing their recycling function."

DiMichele adds the roads were closed in the area so emergency personnel could work the scene.

The fire had lasted about three hours before being securely put out and continuously contained as it didn't spread into the wooded area or trees.

Ocean County Sheriff Mike Mastronardy had reported the hazmat team was on scene to make sure the air (that we breathe) was clean and was one of the emergency responders Friday afternoon.

Sheriff Mastronardy also gave updates to WOBM Friday on the fire at the junkyard.

The Berkeley Township Detective Bureau, the Ocean County Prosecutors Office, the Ocean County Fire Marshal’s Office and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department Crime Scene Unit (CSI) all were at the blaze on Double Trouble Road evaluating the scene.

There was also a heavy fire department presence on scene that included departments from Pinewald Pioneer Fire Department,Bayville Fire Department,Manitou Park Fire Department amongst six other departments.

Also on the scene were other emergency personnel including NJ Forest Fire Service, Berkeley Hazmat, Berkeley Fire Official, among EMS and First Aid from Berkeley, Bayville and Lacey.
