In Saturday’s opening round Girls games 7 of the 8 higher seeds advanced into the quarterfinals and 10th seeded Jackson Liberty’s win over #7 Toms River North was certainly not a major surprise. However when the Boys took the court Sunday at the Pine Belt Arena at Toms River North it was a very different story.

Within a 30-minute stretch both third seeded Freehold Township and number four Manchester were knocked out of championship contention.

In their first-ever WOBM Christmas Classic appearance, the Patriots were shocked by 14th seed Central 58-49 behind sophomore Evan Lang’s 13 points. Freehold Township played without leading scorer John Horrigan who was sidelined with a knee injury. The Golden Eagles will next face sixth seed St. Rose who fought their way past Lacey 42-40.

Toms River East (number 13) pulled off the day’s other stunner when they knocked off Manchester 48-42 as Dave Lewis scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. The Raiders move into the quarterfinals where they will meet defending champion Jackson Memorial, who slipped by Red Bank Catholic 45-41 as Pete Hetzel scored 16 points.

Top-seeded Toms River North coasted past Brick 49-22 with Kyle Carrington scoring 13 points. The Mariners will face Brick Memorial in Thursday’s quarterfinals after the Mustangs edged Point Boro 63-61 in overtime behind a 17-point effort from Mike Golden.

Toms River South made it a sweep for the Toms River schools with a 57-35 win over Wall as sophomore Tymere Berry spun and slashed his way to a 24-point effort. The Indians quarterfinal round opponent will be CBA, who made their WOBM Classic debut a winning one by getting past a game Barnegat squad 56-43. Trevon Gross led the Colts with 15 points.
