First Lady Targets Unhealthy Ads in Schools [AUDIO]

Promotion of sugary snacks and beverages would no longer be permitted in schools under guidelines unveiled by first lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday.

As part of her Let’s Move initiative, the first lady looks to eliminate advertisements for unhealthy foods and drinks on scoreboards, vending machines and posters.

“Our classrooms should be healthy places where kids are not bombarded with ads for junk food,” Obama said at the White House.

Coca-Cola and Pepsi signage wouldn’t have to be removed overnight, but it would most likely be phased out over time. The major companies would have an opportunity to promote their healthier products through the same channel.

“I think that it’s a step in the right direction,” said Dr. Felicia Stoler of the New Jersey Dietetic Association.

Stoler said kids are swarmed by unhealthy ads everywhere else during the day, so removing the marketing from schools would be “a great idea.” However, the move could force some schools to look for alternate sources of revenue.

The first lady’s initiative also included the nationwide expansion of a pilot program that offers free meals to every student in certain low-income schools.
