New information from Lakewood PD indicates that the 27-year-old woman suffered a face laceration and the children, aged 4 and 1, sustained serious head injuries.

They were rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. The children were listed in critical condition and their mother in stable condition, police said.

They were hit by a 1998 Lincoln Town Car driven by a 50-year-old man from Toms River, police said.

The Lakewood Scoop reports dozens of emergency personnel from EMS, Hatzolah and Lakewood First Aid responded to the scene. Route 9 was blocked between Pine Street and Central Avenue for about four hours.

Lakewood’ Traffic Safety division and CSI are investigating.

The spot where the collision took place is south of Route 88 and just to the south of Lake Carasaljo, one lane in each direction, where posted speed limits do not exceed 40 miles per hour.
