The Bangladeshi man accused of trying to bomb the Federal Reserve building in New York City was a banker's son from a middle class neighborhood whose family says it was stunned by his arrest.

The FBI arrested Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis yesterday morning after he allegedly tried to detonate a fake 1,000-pound car bomb. It was all part of a sting. Officials say the defendant earlier sought assurances from an undercover agent posing as an al-Qaida contact that the terrorist group would support the operation.

Nafis was in the United States on a student visa and is now being held without bail.

His family describes Nafis as a gentle man incapable of such actions. His father says: "My son can't do it."

He called on the Bangladesh government to intervene to get his son back to his home country.
