The township's second annual Police Youth Camp takes place this summer, with plenty of experience waiting for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders who live in Toms River.

Entry for the limited number of spots will be competitive. Each students will be required to fill out an application, obtain teacher recommendations, and write an original composition.

According to Chief Mitchell Little, activities during the action-packed week include making the rounds in squad cars, learning how to use specialized police gear, gaining self-defense skills and physical agility, and running an obstacle course.

Campers will also become familiar with the motorcycle officers, SWAT team, Emergency Medical Service workers and their rigs, and firefighting vehicles. They'll also take a field trip to mix with the Ortley Beach lifeguards in their headquarters.

It's all free of charge. However, campers will be obligated to bring their own lunches, drinks and appropriate clothing, shorts and white tee-shirts, for the week of activities.

Applications are available now at Toms River Police headquarters on Oak Avenue. Deadline for submissions is May 15.
