If you're a victim of domestic violence - or if you fear becoming a victim - a seminar this Friday at the Ocean County Courthouse in Toms River can equip you to rise above it.

The workshop, hosted by South Jersey Legal Services, is one of a continuing series presented in Ocean County and the rest of New Jersey's court vicinages through the cooperation of the state judiciary and private-practice attorneys.

One of the key components will be the steps and consequences of obtaining restraining orders. Ocean County Court Ombudsman James Castaneda observes that in August 2015, the number of crimes considered admissible to pursue them expanded.

"There are now four more reasons for an abused party to request a temporary or final restraining order," Castaneda said.

"Until August 10, there were only 14 crimes covered. Now there are four more - criminal coercion, robbery, contempt of a domestic violence order, or any other crime involving the risk of death or serious bodily injury."

During the presentation, lawyers will be unable to discuss specific cases. "However," Castaneda added, "if they do qualify, after the event itself, they may sit with some of the managing attorneys."

The seminar takes place in the Jury Assembly Room in the Justice Complex, starting at 10 AM. Castaneda says that a few spaces remain, but space is limited. Register at 732-929-2063.

Similar workshops that take place throughout the year explore topics such as bankruptcy, and the rights and obligations of landlords and tenants.
