Johnson stops, wheels around and points a gun at the officers. The officers begin firing at Johnson, and he quickly falls to the ground.

The video shows nearly a dozen bystanders running for their lives, including a boy and a girl who were just feet away from Johnson.

Johnson died. Nine bystanders were wounded, likely hit by police officers’ stray gunfire. Six were treated and released.

A laid-off clothing designer fatally shot a former colleague near the skyscraper Friday morning. He then was shot dead by police officers during a confrontation that wounded the nine bystanders, who suffered graze wounds or other minor injuries.

Dramatic surveillance video shows the confrontation lasted only a few seconds.

Police say the officers responded appropriately when shooter Jeffrey Johnson pointed his gun at them.

NY gunman quiet loner, victim outgoing family man

Investigators are trying to piece together what caused a quiet loner laid off from his T-shirt designing job to ambush and kill an apparel company executive outside the Empire State Building.

Police say Jeffrey Johnson shot Steve Ercolino in cold blood in the shadow of the Manhattan landmark Friday, then was shot dead by police after he turned his gun on them.

Johnson spent hours in Central Park, photographing hawks and marveling over nature’s beauty. Neighbors say he left home every morning in a suit despite losing his job a year ago and was always alone.

Relatives say Ercolino was a gregarious salesman beloved by his nieces and nephews.

Police investigating the killing are eyeing bad blood between the men from when they worked together at a garment district business.
