Details from township police are sketchy, but indicate that the call was fielded at 12:55 PM.

Superintendent Dr. Walter Uszenski told WOBM News that it started in a boiler room. A small motor that pumps fresh air into the room burned out and emitted enough smoke to prompt a custodian to trip the alarm.

"He took the right action, and everyone moved quickly, quietly and safely," Uszenski said. The eruption didn't generate enough heat to trigger the fire suppression sprinklers, Uszenski said.

The building was evacuated while smoke dissipated. Students, faculty and staffers settled in at nearby Emma Havens Young School and were said to be filing back inside the facility on Drum Point Road by 1:20 PM.
