Drunk Driving Crackdown Starts Today

The annual “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” drunk driving mobilization begins this weekend in New Jersey.

The state Division of Highway Traffic Safety announced today that more than 400 law enforcement agencies across the state will be aggressively looking for impaired drivers, through sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols.

The special crackdown starts Friday and runs until September 3. To help fund the patrols, more than $175,000 in grants will be distributed to 172 participating agencies.

“Our message is simple and unwavering,” said Division of Highway Traffic Safety Acting Director Gary Poedubicky. “If law enforcement finds you driving impaired, whether by alcohol or drugs, they will arrest you. No exceptions.”

During last year’s crackdown, New Jersey law enforcement made 1,437 DWI arrests. They also issued thousands of summons for speeding, driving with a suspended license, seatbelt violations, and reckless driving.
