Monmouth County prosecutors say 73-year-old Foreman Barkalow of Freehold Township was pronounced dead at the scene of Tuesday's crash. But they say it's not yet clear why Barkalow's station wagon left the road around 11:15 a.m.

Barkalow was southbound on Route 9 at Elton-Adelphia Road when his vehicle crossed over a grassy median and struck a sport utility vehicle. Two other vehicles then collided head-on with the SUV, but no other injuries were reported in the crash.

Barkalow was pronounced dead at the scene according to the Patch of Freehold.

The investigation kept the roadway closed for 4 hours on Tuesday afternoon.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
