A mom and youngster engrossed in a book...a window-washer...a gent perusing a newspaper. These and other activities that occur on any given day in downtown Toms River are depicted in 20 bronze sculptures that will occupy strategic spots there, beginning in May.

The life-size creations of world-renowned artist Seward Johnson are being shipped in by the Toms River Business Development Corporation (TRBID) Community Art Project (CAP), an initiative to enhance the atmosphere in the heart of the township.

Under the rubric "Celebrating The Familiar," the exhibit will be a loan from the Hamilton-based Seward Johnson Atelier, Inc., funded by private-sector and grassroots donations. TRBID is now seeking sponsors for the statuary.

Johnson's sculptures have been displayed in locals as exotic as Hong Kong, Monte Carlo, Paris, Rome and the World Trade Center in Manhattan.

The artwork should turn heads, especially those entering the new TRBID Business Incubator, on Main Street just steps from Water Street, which is scheduled to open its doors in June and already has startup entrepreneurs ready to begin operations..

It also augments the outdoor art initiative that Toms River native Brian Hanlon jump-started within the past year through the Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation. His welcoming sculpture of a family ready for fun can be seen any day at the intersection of Routes 37 and 166.
