My previous post about dining dilemmas got me thinking about another one.  When having dinner with a group of people, is it always best to split the bill evenly?  I agree it's easiest, but I don't think it's fair.

My opinion may be unpopular but I look at it this way:  I work really hard to earn and save my money.  I live within my means.  Restaurant meals are a treat that I budget for.  And sometimes the budget doesn't allow for an expensive entree and extra drinks.  If I'm careful to order a lower cost meal, and if I only have one glass of wine, I don't think I should have to subsidize everyone else's steaks and 3 rounds of drinks.

We all remember that episode of "Friends" that had Phoebe ordering a cold cucumber appetizer when all her pals ordered fancier dishes.  Can you relate to her situation?  I can.

I was happy to find an article that assures me I'm not being cheap.  I'm certainly not alone in wanting to pay only for my share, not everyone else's.

How do you usually handle the dinner bill in a group setting?
