We almost always refer to Memorial Day weekend as "the unofficial start to summer". It's that time on the calendar when people start to plan their vacations, day trips to the beach, and boardwalk games and tanning. But officially, summer doesn't start for another three weeks.

June 21st is the Summer Solstice this year, and a lot of Ocean County kids aren't getting out of school until around that time because of days lost to Hurricane Sandy closings.

It didn't help that the first half of Memorial Day weekend was chilly and rainy, but even then there was a good bit of activity on the boardwalks (and, of course, the Parkway). And this past weekend was hot and steamy, in other words a perfect beach weekend.

So what do you think? Do you see Memorial Day weekend as the dividing line where summer begins, or with the kids still in school are is it not really summer yet?
