Police responded to a home on Cherrywood CIrcle after receiving a call from a man threatening to "create a disturbance." According to a statement by Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph Coronado, a man approached the officers with "what appeared to be a black semi-automatic hand gun" that officers ordered him to drop. When he failed to comply, the officers fired at the man several times, killing him, the prosecutor's office said.

Derek Hoffman tells the Asbury Park Press it was his son, Julian Hoffman, who met police. Authorities have not released the names of anyone involved.

"He did have an air rifle with him," the paper quotes Derek Hoffman, who did not witness the incident, saying. "He put it on the ground, got back up and put his hands in the air."

Prosecutor's Office spokesman Al Della Fave told New Jersey 101.5 he couldn't yet speak to what the man had been carrying, or why it was only described as what "appeared" to be a gun in the Coronado's statement.

Derek Hoffman reportedly told the Press police shot his son, sending bullets into the home.

Another witness identified as Alisa told the newspaper she saw police turn Julian Hoffman over after he had been shot and says his hands looked to be raised as if surrendering. But Della Fave said authorities interviewed Alisa, and neither she nor any other person interviewed by police told authorities they actually witnessed the shooting, according to the report. Hoffman told NJ.com that he has video from a surveillance camera on his home that shows Julian's arms as being up.

The Prosecutor's  Office along with the Ocean County Sheriff's Department and Brick Police continue to investigate the incident.
