Advanced medical technology continues to prolong life for cancer patients. The CyberKnife system has been around for years but is growing in popularity around New Jersey.

CyberKnife provides a form of treatment called stereotactic radiosurgery. It’s a noninvasive method of treating tumors with high-doses of radiation aimed at the area on your body affected by the cancer. Traditional treatments often result in excess radiation with unwelcome side effects. The direct contact with CyberKnife actually leaves the healthy cells around the surrounding tumor intact.

Dr. David D’Ambrosio is the Medical Director of the CyberKnife program at Community Medical Center in Toms River. He says “this revolutionary technology has made life easier for many patients. It’s a painless alternative to surgery. We know other hospitals around the state have CyberKnife facilities in place and they will expand even more.”

The key advantages of CyberKnife include:

  • Treats patients in as few as one to five visits
  • Pain free and requires no anesthesia
  • It’s an outpatient procedure and doesn’t require a hospital stay
  • Little to no side effects
  • Minimizes radiation exposure
  • Reaches tumors from every possible direction.

CyberKnife can be used to treat a wide variety of cancers. Dr. D’Ambrosio says “they range from prostate, breast, ovarian, kidney, bone, eye, spine, liver, pancreas and even brain tumors. With technology constantly advancing, it may soon be possible to have more options.”
