Some odds and ends to cover today.

This is a big high school wrestling week as the NJSIAA Team Tournament got underway last night and will conclude with Sunday’s group championships at the Pine Belt Arena. It’s the beginning of the post-season for the sport with the district, regional and state individual championships to follow in the weeks ahead.

It seems like an ideal time to say goodbye to a coaching legend and family and friends will do that when they gather to celebrate the life of Paul Mueller, who passed away on December 30th at his Florida home at the age of 74. Paul was the first wrestling coach at Manchester Township High School, re-locating to the area from North Jersey when the school opened in the mid-70s.

He built the Hawks into a Shore Conference power and led by Mark Van Tine & Mark Francis won three division titles in a four-year stretch between 1980-83. Mueller taught physical education and also coached soccer and softball before retiring in 1994 and moving to Florida. Friends are invited to celebrate his life this Thursday at the Brick Township Volunteer EMS Hall at 500 Aurora Place in Brick from 4 p.m. -7 p.m.
Paul leaves behind three children Kathleen, Paul and Kevin and three grandchildren.

I was sorry to learn of the passing of Arline Ottoson of Seaside Heights last week at the age of 85. I knew Arline for as long as I could remember as for many years she owned the Atlantic Motel which was close to where I lived growing up. Active in the community she served as a Councilwoman for over 20 years and my deepest sympathy to her son Ernie and the rest of the Ottoson family.

While winter is still very much evident the Berkeley Senior Softball League is actively recruiting players for tje spring and summer season. More than 150 men and one woman played last year in the two divisions based on age and in some cases geography. The league plays its games on weekday mornings from April to August in Holiday City and Veterans Park. March 31st is the deadline for registration and for information you can call Mike Singer at 732-350-7063 or visit the league’s website, leaguelineup/berkeleySSL.

Should be fun to see what happens with the New Hampshire primary today and whether or not it’s the finale for Governor Christie. There could be some surprises with this one and I’m predicting a strong finish for Ohio Governor John Kasich. Of course I also liked Carolina in the Super Bowl.
