Authorities say Keith Morgan and his wife Shauna allegedly told police Thursday they had found a Cocker Spaniel in a garbage bag along Belmar Boulevard in Wall Township. The SPCA even named the dog "Morgan" in the couple's honor.

Keith Morgan spoke to News12 New Jersey the day before and talked about how he started to cry when he and his wife watched a slow-moving car put a bag with the dog inside along the road.

However, after Victor “Buddy” Amato, chief humane law enforcement officer for MSPCA, saw the interview, his suspicions were raised. Officials at the Associated Human Society in Tinton Falls told News12 New Jersey that the dog, believed to be 8-years-old,  was actually registered to someone in the Morgan home, leading to the arrest of Morgan and his wife Shauna Friday on charges of animal cruelty and filing a false report. It's not clear if they've retained lawyers.

Additional charges could be filed if the dog dies

The SPCA described the dog as having matted fur and being covered in waste when he was found. News12 New Jersey say the dog is on a feeding tube and is slowly being cleaned up.
