There are two very different kinds of anniversaries.  Some we “celebrate” like wedding anniversaries and those that remind us of good times.  Then there are ones which we “commemorate” which serve more as a remembrance or memorial of what was an important date but likely a sad one as well.

October 29th will mark the 5-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy making landfall in New Jersey and you could make a case it’s a date we will both commemorate and celebrate.

Sandy was a disaster for many in Ocean County and it will be years before we make a full recovery although what many lost will never be replaced.  Yet we can celebrate the resolve of people who have overcome hardships to rebuild not only their homes but their lives.

For that reason, I fully endorse the efforts of OceanFirst Bank to mark the fifth anniversary by being a part of history and doing something to help others.  On Saturday, October 28 you can be part of an effort to break the Guinness Book World Record for “Most Sand Angels Made Simultaneously” on the beach in Seaside Park.

The current record is 1,387 set in June on a Lake Michigan beachfront in Ludington, Michigan and OceanFirst Bank officials are hoping for at least 1,500 when they gather later this month.

While the record is a good enough reason to take part there is more.  The first 1,500 to register and pay $5.00 will receive a free “Sandy Angels Tee Shirt” and 100% of all registration money will be donated to the Ocean County Long Term Recovery Group and the Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services.

In addition both the OceanFirst Foundation and New Jersey Natural Gas will donate $10 each for the first 1,500 registrants to those two charitable organizations.

You can be part of an incredible effort to make angels and make history.  You must pre-register and to do so simply visit oceanfirstangels.com where you can also get complete instructions on how to make a Sandy Angel.
