Christie will announce his support for Steve Lonegan at Hunterdon County Republican Headquarters in Flemington.

The governor's endorsement had been anticipated. But it remains doubtful that Christie, who is running for re-election, will do much more to aid the Senate candidate.

The governor has been staking out middle ground on issues ranging from gun control to medical marijuana for children in recent weeks.

Christie is a strong contender for the Republican nomination for president in 2016.

Lonegan, the former state director of the anti-tax group Americans for Prosperity, is running against Democrat Cory Booker. Christie has a good working relationship with the Newark mayor and considers him a friend.
