Giving the keynote address at any national convention is an honor, but it’s also a job that comes with a clear description of what’s required.

Tonight in Tampa, Governor Chris Christie will deliver the keynote at the Republican National Convention and he has clear goals.

“The keynote speaker is the warm up act,” explains Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute. “His (Christie’s) job is to get you excited about for the headliner, and that headliner of course is the (Mitt) Romney-(Paul) Ryan ticket.”

Murray says Christie has to lay out why the Romney-Ryan ticket is the better choice and what the Republican Party has to offer that the Democrats do not. He says the speech must excite not only the crowd in Tampa, but also those watching at home.

“Christie going to focus on a couple of things I think,” explains Murray. “The first is going to be leadership and how there’s been a real dirge of leadership down in D.C. under Barack Obama. He’ll be able to use his own experiences here in New Jersey to contrast that. He’s also going to talk about Republican Party ideas.”

Murray says, “The 20-minute speech will be geared towards Republicans however, within that speech there will be 15-second or 30-second sound bites that will be played out later on news shows. Those are the ones that are going to be geared towards the independent voter.”
