You've probably heard the big circus news:  Ringling Bros.' final shows will happen in May.  Low ticket sales, shortened audience attention spans, and changing tastes were all factors in the decision to end the shows 146 year run.  As well as expensive legal battles with animal rights activists.

Before I really understood the concerns about the animals, I enjoyed some shows under the big top.  My parents took me to Madison Square Garden one time when I was little.  It was the first time I think I had ever been to a big arena like that.  It was an exciting experience with all the lights and costumes.  The ringmaster's announcing style made me feel I was witnessing something really special.  Then going back a couple years later, I remember enjoying the silly clowns and the death-defying feats from the acrobats.

And the fact that I could eat popcorn AND cotton candy in one day?  Well, it felt like the best day ever.

Where did you first see the big circus?  Where did you see it?  (Remember, I grew up in Queens so Manhattan was the closest venue for my family.)  Where were the big tops in New Jersey?  What's your favorite circus memory from your childhood?
