Changes Coming to Parkway Through Ocean County [AUDIO]

One of Ocean County‘s biggest traffic headaches is close to being relieved, but not before motorists have to put up with a little more frustration.

A full interchange at Exit 91 of the Garden State Parkway in Brick Township is slated to start construction this summer, creating an on-ramp and off-ramp for vehicles in both directions.

“Coming from the east on Burnt Tavern Road, or if you’re coming from the north on Lanes Mills Road or from the south on Burrsville Road, you won’t have to crisscross and go through 15 jughandles to get on or off the direction of the Parkway you’re looking for,” said Ocean County engineer Frank Scarantino.

The project, which is expected to last two to three years, shouldn’t cause too many delays initially. Scarantino said a lot of the initial construction will be done in areas where there are currently no roads.

“As we get into stage two of the construction,” Scarantino said, “which is almost a year away — May 2015 — we start to connect a lot of the new pieces to the old pieces, and that would require some staging which will have impacts on traffic.”

Ocean County officials hope the project makes it not only easier for drivers to get on and off the Parkway, but that it also reduces congestion on county roads.

Scarantino said during rush hour, the roads have an “F” service level grade according to a design criteria from the state.

“When we’re done, the roads should be good for 20 years at a level of service ‘D,’” Scarantino said. “In fact, a lot of the improvements will be good for a level of service ‘A’ and ‘B’ beyond the 20 years.”
